Can Natural Compounds Like Berberine & Emodin Support Breast Cancer Pathways?
Emerging research is showing us just how active the connection is between certain proteins and cancer cell behaviour. One such protein, called SIK3, is found in higher amounts in breast cancer cells compared to normal cells—especially under stress conditions like high salt levels. SIK3 activates a growth and energy pathway (called mTOR/Akt) that allows cancer cells to grow, spread, and avoid natural cell death.
What’s interesting is that berberine (a compound found in many herbal medicines) and emodin (from plants like rhubarb) have been shown to calm this pathway. In lab studies, they work by lowering SIK3 activity, reducing energy supply to the cancer cells, and encouraging them to die off—essentially slowing down tumour progression.
While this is early-stage research and not a substitute for medical treatment, it does help us understand how plant-based compounds can interact with the body at a cellular level.
